Enola Gay should take Saratoga Oaks

Three-year-old turf fillies will have the spotlight at Saratoga this Sunday in the $500,000 Saratoga Oaks. This 1 3/16th-mile heat drew a field of seven, led by recent stakes winners #1 SPEAKTOMEOFSUMMER and #2 ENOLA GAY. Post time for the Saratoga Oaks, the ninth of 10 races at “The Spa” on Sunday, is 5:46 p.m. ET.

#2 ENOLA GAY (2-1, morning-line favorite) overcame an extended layoff and a stretchout in distance to take the Grade II Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland last time out in what was a very impressive effort. She has every right to improve off that in her second try at age three. That makes ENOLA GAY dangerous in here for trainer Shug McGaughey, winning at nearly 30 percent at Saratoga this season. The daughter of Uncle Mo’s most recent tune-up work was strong, and Jose Ortiz sees fit to ride.

#1 SPEAKTOMEOFSUMMER (3-1) prevailed over three of today’s foes in the Grade II Lake Placid here last time out. That brought her career record up to 3-for-5. However, the Lake Placid didn’t look like a particularly strong race on paper. SPEAKTOMEOFSUMMER should be rolling late under Joel Rosario – we’ll see if this Christophe Clement trainee is good enough.

#7 QUEENS EMBRACE (10-1) closed well to be third in the Lake Placid when last seen. Her 6-3-0-2 record on turf is impressive, and that includes a runaway allowance score at Monmouth two-back. The slight stretchout in distance could work to her advantage. Tyler Gaffalione will ride QUEENS EMBRACE once more.

The play: $6 exacta 2/1, $4 exacta 2/7 ($10)
