Saturday’s Grade I, $300,000 Forego Stakes has brought forth a solid group of sprinters at Saratoga. There are 11 runners slated to do battle over seven furlongs in this one, including 2018 race winner WHITMORE. Post time for the Forego, the ninth of 11 races at “The Spa” this Saturday, is 5:07 p.m. ET.
#10 MIND CONTROL (6-1) will be the tepid top choice in a deep renewal of the Forego. He was last seen settling for third in the devoid-of-speed, four-horse Vanderbilt Stakes over this course. That was his first loss at Saratoga (3-2-0-1 record). The stretchout to seven furlongs, a distance at which MIND CONTROL has won four of seven starts, and the promise of a faster pace thanks to a large field, offer hope of improvement on Saturday. John Velazquez rides once more.
#2 WHITMORE (7-2, morning-line favorite) is the elder statesman of the group at age seven. While he’s done his best work at Oaklawn, he can win elsewhere. His 2018 Forego score is proof positive. WHITMORE was second behind a strong opponent in Volatile in last month’s Vanderbilt. He could atone on Saturday under Luis Saez.
#6 COMPLEXITY (4-1) and #11 FORTIN HILL (6-1) comprise a solid one-two punch for trainer Chad Brown in the Forego. They profile somewhat similarly, with neither finding the track on a regular basis. COMPLEXITY has a Grade I win in his back pocket, but a lot has changed since his 2018 victory in the Champagne. FORTIN HILL is untested against stakes company but looks fast enough to compete. Jose Ortiz and Irad Ortiz Jr. are the respective riders.
The play: $10 win 10
