Multiplier can end long losing streak in Charles Town Classic

Charles Town’s centerpiece event, the Grade II, $600,000 Charles Town Classic, is set for Friday night. The 1 1/8-mile heat, conducted over three turns, drew a field of 10 plus one also-eligible. Post time for the Charles Town Classic, the 11th of 12 races on a stakes-laden program, is 10:18 p.m. ET.

#10 MULTIPLIER (9-2) is 0-for-7 this year, but his record is a little better than it looks on the surface. Handicappers should start by tossing his two turf tries. MULTIPLIER was beaten just a neck in the Santa Anita Handicap back in March and lost narrowly on two occasions to the same horse – Ax Man – going shorter at Santa Anita. He checked in fourth as a big longshot behind Tom’s d’Etat in the Stephen Foster last time out. MULTIPLIER figures to endure the taxing nine-furlong, three-turn trip in the Charles Town Classic, and it speaks volumes that leading local rider Arnaldo Bocachica chose this Peter Miller trainee in a race where no out-of-town jockeys are making the trip.

#4 MATH WIZARD (3-1, morning-line favorite) ran off the board in his first three starts following his upset victory in the Grade I Pennsylvania Derby last year, but he showed signs of recapturing his winning form with a runner-up effort in the Grade III Monmouth Cup last time out. Christian Hiraldo, winning at a 20 percent clip at Charles Town as of Wednesday, has the call.

#3 MO DONT NO (15-1) merits longshot consideration in this spot. He was last seen winning the 10-furlong Buckeye Cup at Thistledown over the #1 FOREWARNED. Local sharpie Wesley Ho will be in the irons.

The play: $10 win 10
