Admiralty Pier can post upset in Woodbine Mile

The Grade I, $1 million Woodbine Mile, a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, anchors Saturday’s card at Woodbine. The prestigious turf heat drew a field of eight, including the Mark Casse-trained trio of WAR OF WILL, MARCH TO THE ARCH and OLYMPIC RUNNER. Post time for the Woodbine Mile, Race 9 of 12 on the day, is 5:39 p.m. ET.

#6 ADMIRALTY PIER (10-1) will try to make every step a winning one in the Woodbine Mile. He was last seen settling for second in the Grade II King Edward Stakes here behind MARCH TO THE ARCH. However, ADMIRALTY PIER had to run a testing half-mile of 46.23 to make the lead. The Grade III Tampa Bay Stakes winner may not have to work as hard on Saturday under Steven Bahen. ADMIRALTY PIER has run speed figures good enough to win a race like this in 2020.

#1 MARCH TO THE ARCH (5-2) took advantage of an ideal setup in the King Edward when last seen. It’s also telling that Rafael Hernandez jumped off to ride WAR OF WILL in here. However, MARCH TO THE ARCH is a perfect 2-for-2 lifetime over this course. He should not be underestimated under Patrick Husbands.

#8 WAR OF WILL (2-1, morning-line favorite) moves up if there’s a scratch in the Woodbine Mile. He managed to get his nose down in the Grade I Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland last time out in what was a blanket finish. The 2019 Preakness winner has yet to win a race over this course in two attempts, but hit the board on each occasion. WAR OF WILL has drilled sharply for this and was Hernandez’s choice.

The play: $10 win 6
