Awesome Again anchors Saturday action at Santa Anita

The Grade I, $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes is the Saturday feature at Santa Anita on a card that contains five “Win and You’re In” races for the Breeders’ Cup. Let’s take a look at two of those races here.

Santa Anita Race 7 (Post time: 6:41 p.m. ET)

The Grade I, $300,000 Rodeo Drive Stakes

1 1/4-miles on turf

#3 BODHICITTA (5-2) beat #1 TONAHUTU by just a nose when they last met in Del Mar’s Grade II Yellow Ribbon Handicap, but this Richard Baltas trainee should win much more comfortably in Saturday’s Rodeo Drive.

BODHICITTA has three wins and a runner-up result in the Grade I Gamely in four starts this season. Her running lines from those effort indicate that she will appreciate a stretchout in distance on Saturday. BODHICITTA boasts a 5-3-1-0 record at Santa Anita, drilled a bullet to prep for this, and retains Flavien Prat.

The play: $10 win 3

Santa Anita Race 10 (Post time: 8:14 p.m. ET)

The Grade I, $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes

1 1/8-miles on dirt

#5 MAXIMUM SECURITY (3-5, morning-line favorite) has reeled off six straight victories, highlighted by three Grade Is. That includes his impressive three-length Pacific Classic score at Del Mar in his second career start for Bob Baffert. MAXIMUM SECURITY has never raced at Santa Anita but has drilled well over this course. He’s 2-for-2 at the 1 1/8-mile trip and will be reunited with regular rider Luis Saez on Saturday.

#2 IMPROBABLE (8-5) has a puncher’s chance at the victory in the Awesome Again if the pace comes apart. MAXIMUM SECURITY could face early pressure from #1 TAKE THE ONE O ONE and #3 SLEEPY EYES TODD. If IMPROBABLE gets an ideal setup under jockey Drayden Van Dyke, the Hollywood Gold Cup winner may find the winner’s circle once more.

#4 MIDCOURT (6-1) was last seen running third in the 1 1/4-mile Pacific Classic. Shortening up to 1 1/8-miles in the Awesome Again, a distance he’s a perfect 2-for-2 at, could be just what the doctor ordered. MIDCOURT was beaten just a nose by MAXIMUM SECURITY in the 1 1/16th-mile San Diego Handicap back in July. He’ll be piloted once more by Victor Espinoza.

The play: $6 trifecta 5/2/4, $2 trifecta 5/4/2, $2 trifecta 2/5/4 ($10)
