Curlin’s Voyage can continue recent run of filly success in Queen’s Plate

The $1 million Queen’s Plate, Canada’s version of the Kentucky Derby, will be renewed at Woodbine this Saturday. A field of 14, including Woodbine Oaks winner CURLIN’S VOYAGE and Plate Trial victor CLAYTON, will face the gate in this 1 1/4-mile contest. Post time for the prestigious Queen’s Plate, Race 10 on a 13-race program, is 5:41 p.m. ET.

#10 CURLIN’S VOYAGE (5-2) could become the third filly to win the Queen’s Plate in the last four years. She was an impressive winner of the Woodbine Oaks last time out, running a career-best speed figure in the process. CURLIN’S VOYAGE is now 5-for-9 all-time over this course. Being by Curlin out of a Stormy Atlantic mare, she should handle the stretchout to 10 furlongs on Saturday. Patrick Husbands will be in the irons once more.

#12 CLAYTON (2-1, morning-line favorite) is a perfect 2-for-2 routing at Woodbine, including his Plate Trial score last time out. His natural early speed should keep him out of trouble from this post, and the speed figures suggest he is capable of beating these. CLAYTON also has a strong pedigree for the distance, being by Bodemeister out of a Smart Strike mare. Rafael Hernandez has the call.

#2 MERVEILLEUX (10-1) is the second of the two fillies entered in the 2020 Queen’s Plate. She also has a shot to hit the ticket based on her solid résumé. MERVEILLEUX has missed the ticket only once in six career route tries. She’s been beaten by CURLIN’S VOYAGE in both their previous meetings, but the first defeat was by just a head in the Ontario Lassie last year. The most recent loss came in the Woodbine Oaks, where MERVEILLEUX ran into some traffic trouble before rallying for third. Her running style suggests she’ll appreciate the stretchout under Kazushi Kimura.

The play: $5 exacta 10/12, $3 exacta 12/10, $2 exacta 10/2 ($10)
