Hopeful, Del Mar Futurity highlight Labor Day action

The curtain comes down on both the Saratoga and Del Mar summer meets on Labor Day. But both circuits are going out with a bang – “The Spa” has 14 races on tap, including the Grade I Hopeful Stakes, while the Grade I Del Mar Futurity anchors an 11-race Monday card “Where the Turf Meets the Surf.” Let’s look at both races below.

Saratoga Race 13 (Post time: 5:50 p.m. ET)

The Grade I, $250,000 Hopeful Stakes

Seven furlongs on dirt

#5 REINVESTMENT RISK (8-5) gets the nod over Saratoga Special winner #6 JACKIE’S WARRIOR (7-5, morning-line favorite) in the Hopeful. The Chad Brown trainee broke his maiden with devastating ease, winning while nearly eight lengths clear of the runner-up and geared down under Irad Ortiz Jr.. The horse that ran third to REINVESTMENT RISK, Olympiad, returned to win a maiden race at Saratoga on Saturday – an encouraging sign.

JACKIE’S WARRIOR commands respect based on his 2-for-2 record and stakes win in the Saratoga Special. However, the horse that ran second to JACKIE’S WARRIOR in each race, Rideofalifetime, flopped in the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill on Saturday, reflecting negatively on this Steve Asmussen trainee. Joel Rosario has the call.

The play: $5 exacta box 5/6 ($10)

Del Mar Race 10 (Post time: 8:30 p.m. ET)

The Grade I, $250,000 Del Mar Futurity

Seven furlongs on dirt

#6 DR. SCHIVEL (8-5, morning-line favorite) finally put things together in his third career start after encountering trouble in each of his first two outings. The added ground, switch to Del Mar and the in-the-clear three-wide trip all worked wonders. Now Flavien Prat gets aboard DR. SCHIVEL, who beat SPIELBERG by over five lengths when they met on Aug. 8.

#5 DIXIE’S TWO STENTS (3-1) stayed on strongly in the stretch on debut going just five panels. Based on his running style, the stretchout should work to this Doug O’Neill trainee’s advantage. Mario Gutierrez rides DIXIE’S TWO STENTS once more.

#1 SPIELBERG (2-1) did well on debut for Bob Baffert but ran into a buzzsaw in DR. SCHIVEL. Unfortunately for this son of Union Rags, he’ll encounter that foe once more in the Del Mar Futurity. He’s best used underneath as Abel Cedillo takes the assignment.

The play: $5 exacta 6/1,5 ($10)
