Zulu Alpha looks tough in Kentucky Turf Cup

The Grade III, $1 million Kentucky Turf Cup is Saturday’s feature race at Kentucky Downs. The 1 1/2-mile event brought out 16 of the country best grass runners, though only 12 will start. Post time for the Kentucky Turf Cup, Race 10 of 11 on the day, is 6:04 p.m. ET.

#10 ZULU ALPHA (7-5, morning-line favorite) will attempt to defend his 2019 Kentucky Turf Cup title on Saturday. He enters this race in even better form than he had last year, as he’s won three of his last four starts, all stakes. That includes his Grade I Pegasus World Cup Turf strike. ZULU ALPHA is clearly the one to beat on speed figures as well and retains Tyler Gaffalione.

#5 ARKLOW (9-2) has struggled to build on his 2019 campaign, in which he won the Grade I Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont, as he has just one ITM finish in four starts in 2020. However, the 2018 Kentucky Turf Cup champ was also second in this race last year. ARKLOW must be respected over this unique Kentucky Downs course under Florent Geroux.

#2 RED KNIGHT (12-1) could be the value of the race. He was a modest fourth in his only start of the season – the Grade III W.L. McKnight at Gulfstream. But prior to that he was second in the Grade III Red Smith at Aqueduct and took the Point of Entry Stakes at Belmont. RED KNIGHT fired a bullet for his comeback race for Bill Mott – Luis Saez has the call.

The play: $6 exacta 10/5, $4 exacta 10/2 ($10)
