Art Collector should outgame Authentic in Preakness

The Grade I, $1 million Preakness Stakes, the third and final jewel of the 2020 Triple Crown, is set for Saturday at Pimlico. A field of 11, including Kentucky Derby winner AUTHENTIC, will contest this 1 3/16th-mile affair. Post time for the Preakness, the 11th of 12 races on an all-stakes program at Pimlico, is 5:36 p.m. ET.

#3 ART COLLECTOR (5-2) was supposed to compete in the Kentucky Derby, but a minor foot ailment held him back. However, the Ellis Park Derby and Blue Grass Stakes victor, who’s a perfect 4-for-4 this year, has trained well since. So it stands to reason that ART COLLECTOR is at full-strength for Saturday’s Preakness. Based on his progression in 2020, ART COLLECTOR could take the next small step forward and record his first Grade I victory here. Brian Hernandez Jr. will be aboard once more for trainer Thomas Drury, who seeks his first Triple Crown score.

#9 AUTHENTIC (9-5, morning-line favorite) earned his Kentucky Derby victory by running hard every step on the front end. Tiz The Law, who bypassed the Preakness for next month’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, tested him throughout the journey and in the lane but AUTHENTIC held firm under John Velazquez. It remains to be seen if the son of Into Mischief, who’s 4-for-5 with one runner-up result in 2020, will take another step forward or regress off that taxing effort. However, the AM workouts for Bob Baffert suggest that AUTHENTIC is in peak form.

#4 SWISS SKYDIVER (6-1) will try her luck with the boys again after finishing second in the Kentucky Oaks. She was a distant second to ART COLLECTOR when these two met in the Blue Grass Stakes back in July. However, SWISS SKYDIVER’s speed figures suggest she can land a share in the Preakness. Robby Albarado will be in the irons for trainer Ken McPeek.

The play: $10 exacta 3/9, $4 exacta 3/4, $4 exacta 9/3, $2 exacta 9/4 ($20)
