Phat Man looks best off the bench in Bold Ruler

The Grade III, $100,000 Bold Ruler Handicap anchors the final Saturday card of the Belmont fall meet. A field of six will sprint seven furlongs in this one, led by Grade III Fred Hooper winner PHAT MAN. Post time for the Bold Ruler, the ninth of 10 races on the Belmont program, is 4:57 p.m. ET.

#6 PHAT MAN (2-1, morning-line favorite) has not raced since Feb. 29, when he checked in second in the Grade II Gulfstream Park Mile behind Mr Freeze. However, he is working swiftly for his return at Monmouth, firing a three-furlong bullet on Sunday. If PHAT MAN duplicates either his last-out effort or Hooper score two-back, the others are running for place on Saturday. Javier Castellano will be in the irons.

#5 MAJESTIC DUNHILL (5-2) demonstrated versatility when last seen, stalking the pace and nearly winning against high-level allowance/optional claiming company. He typically lays far back, but Joel Rosario made a wise tactical move in that heat. MAJESTIC DUNHILL should be best served in the Bold Ruler by stalking probable pacesetter #2 SHARE THE RIDE and hoping he has enough to hold off PHAT MAN late. Rosario retains the ride here.

#4 ARCH CAT (10-1) could surprise and land a share in the Bold Ruler at a fairly big price. It’s hard to find an excuse for his recent third-place effort against allowance foes at Parx, but he won three straight races prior to that on the mid-Atlantic circuit. ARCH CAT drilled a bullet in preparation for this for trainer Daniel Velazquez, who took both the Sleepy Hollow Stakes (Brooklyn Strong) and Maid of the Mist Stakes (Laobanonaprayer) at Belmont last Saturday. Kendrick Carmouche has the call.

The play: $5 exacta 6/5, $3 exacta 6/4, $2 exacta 5/6 ($10)
