Maximum Security seeks rare upset victory in Breeders’ Cup Classic

The Grade I, $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic will conclude Saturday’s lucrative championship card at Keeneland racecourse. Going as the 12th race on the program, the 1 1/4-mile affair drew a field of 10, led by the Bob Baffert-trained trio of IMPROBABLE, AUTHENTIC and MAXIMUM SECURITY. Post time for the 37th annual Breeders’ Cup Classic is 5:18 Eastern.

#10 MAXIMUM SECURITY (7-2) will likely go off at his highest odds since his controversial disallowed Kentucky Derby victory. He’s crossed the wire first in both his races going 10 furlongs, including the Pacific Classic two-back. MAXIMUM SECURITY may not have been fully-cranked for the nine-furlong Awesome Again last time out but has drilled exceptionally since. He’ll be piloted once more by Luis Saez, who could work out the ideal stalking trip from this post.

#4 TOM’S D’ETAT (6-1) could be the value of the Breeders’ Cup Classic. His camp’s decision not to race since a disastrous run in the Whitney in which he was wiped out at the start was questionable. However, his four-race winning streak going into that heat is too impressive to ignore. TOM’S D’ETAT can win from on or off the pace, giving Joel Rosario valuable tactical options.

#2 TIZ THE LAW (3-1) moves up in the event of a scratch. His connections made the wise move by skipping the Preakness and training up to the Classic after a shocking and punishing defeat in the Kentucky Derby. TIZ THE LAW is training smartly for Barclay Tagg, who once again names Manny Franco to ride. If TIZ THE LAW runs back to his Travers victory two starts ago, he should be involved late.

The play: $10 win 4,10 ($20)
