Red Knight out for revenge on Sadler’s Joy in Red Smith

The Grade III, $100,000 Red Smith Stakes is the feature on Saturday’s 10-race program at Aqueduct. A field of 11 will be tested over 1 3/8-miles on the inner turf course. That includes the 2019 winner of the Red Smith, SADLER’S JOY. Post time for the 2020 renewal of the Red Smith, Saturday’s ninth at “The Big A,” is 3:45 p.m. ET.

#10 RED KNIGHT (5-2) is in good form and is capable of turning the tables on SADLER’S JOY, who beat him in last year’s running of the Red Smith. He was last seen winning the Grade III Sycamore Stakes at 1 1/2-miles at Keeneland last month. RED KNIGHT was second in the Grade III Kentucky Turf Cup two-back despite an eight-month layoff and a soft surface. He’ll get a significant rider upgrade to Jose Ortiz as he looks to post the minor upset on Saturday.

#4 SADLER’S JOY (8-5, morning-line favorite) is a logical alternative in this heat despite an 0-for-7 record in 2020. He was last seen running third for the fourth time this season behind Channel Maker (third in the Breeders’ Cup Turf) in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park. SADLER’S JOY crossed the wire first in the Grade II Bowling Green at today’s distance at Saratoga three-back but was controversially disqualified and placed fourth. SADLER’S JOY has never lost at Aqueduct (2-for-2) and lures Joel Rosario.

#8 ZIYAD (9-2) figures to land a share in Saturday’s Red Smith. He was a solid third in his return to the states in the Sycamore last time out. Potent connections in jockey Manny Franco and trainer Graham Motion back this son of Rock of Gibraltar.
