Red Flag should find winner’s circle in Los Alamitos Futurity

The Grade II, $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity anchors a 10-race card at Los Alamitos this Saturday. Going as the fourth race, the Los Alamitos Futurity drew a field of six two-year-olds looking to make their mark early on the Kentucky Derby trail. Post time for the Los Alamitos Futurity is 4:28 p.m. ET.

#1 RED FLAG (EVEN, morning-line favorite) was last seen romping by 7 1/4-lengths in the Grade III Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar. Among the rivals he crushed in that heat was SPIELBERG, who ran fourth as the 3-5 favorite. That foe is already proven around two turns, but RED FLAG doesn’t offer any signs – pedigree or otherwise – that suggest he won’t be able to negotiate the 1 1/16th-mile trip on Saturday. RED FLAG will be ridden once more by Victor Espinoza.

#5 POSITIVITY (8-1) was last seen closing for second in a state-bred stake going seven furlongs at Del Mar. The son of Paynter takes a step up in class in the Los Alamitos Futurity, but the speed figures say he belongs. POSITIVITY could also benefit from the increase in distance. Drayden Van Dyke has the call once again.

#6 SPIELBERG (5-2) has not shown a strong desire to win, but he’s also taken on some of the best horses in his division. He placed in both the Grade I Del Mar Futurity and the Grade I American Pharoah Stakes earlier this season. SPIELBERG has potent connections behind him in trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Flavien Prat.

The play: $4 exacta 1/5,6, $2 win 5 ($10)
