Count Again should take San Gabriel

The Grade II, $200,000 San Gabriel Stakes anchors Saturday’s action at Santa Anita. The 1 1/8-mile turf heat drew a field of seven, including former Grade I winners NEXT SHARES and BOWIES HERO. Post time for the San Gabriel, Race 7 of nine on the program, is 6:30 p.m. ET.

#5 COUNT AGAIN (2-1, morning-line favorite) is the one to beat in Saturday’s San Gabriel based on his Seabiscuit Stakes win. The Canadian invader aced that November heat at Del Mar in his first career start for trainer Phil D’Amato. COUNT AGAIN drilled a bullet to prep for this and retains Juan Hernandez. As long as he gets a clean trip, COUNT AGAIN should be heard from in the lane.

#3 BOB AND JACKIE (4-1) could find himself on the lead in a race lacking true speed types. He’s 4-for-8 lifetime, all on the turf, for Richard Baltas. That includes stakes scores in the Eddie Logan, Let It Ride, and Wickerr. BOB AND JACKIE has been competing in Grade IIs lately, finishing third and fourth in his last two starts, but won’t face the likes of Mo Forza here. Heriberto Figueroa rides once more.

#2 NEXT SHARES (4-1) is the best of the rest. He’s looking to snap a seven-race losing streak, albeit most of those starts were in Grade I races. NEXT SHARES owns a 10-1-3-3 lifetime record at Santa Anita, so he looks best-used underneath. Jose Valdivia Jr. has the call.

The play: $6 exacta 5/3, $3 exacta 3/5, $3 exacta 3,5/2 ($15)
