Ride a Comet should take Tropical Turf

The Grade III, $100,000 Tropical Turf Stakes is the centerpiece on Saturday’s 11-race program at Gulfstream Park. A field of nine will try their luck on the lawn in this one-mile event. That includes ANALYZE IT, twice a Grade III winner and nearly a two-time Grade I champion in 2018. Post time for the Tropical Turf, scheduled as Race 10, is 4:49 p.m. ET.

#3 RIDE A COMET (5-1) looks like a solid wager in his first start of 2021. He capped off a successful 2018 campaign with a win in the Grade II Del Mar Derby before hitting the shelf for over two years. RIDE A COMET bounced back with two straight wins on synthetic dirt at Woodbine, one of which was a Grade II score in the Kennedy Road.

The Mark Casse trainee should be taken seriously in his return to the turf based on his 5-4-0-1 career record on the surface. He’s also a perfect 2-for-2 at the one-mile trip on the grass. RIDE A COMET will be piloted by Tyler Gaffalione.

#6 ANALYZE IT (2-1, morning-line favorite) nearly won the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 2018 before going on an extended hiatus. His racing career resumed in September of 2020 with a win in the Grade III Red Bank at Monmouth. The Chad Brown trainee jumped back up to Grade I company in the Shadwell Turf Mile the following month but ran a disappointing eighth. Off a brief freshening, ANALYZE IT commands respect dropping back to this level with Irad Ortiz Jr. taking the call.

#1 ADMISSION OFFICE (7-2) is a contender based on speed figures, but he may find the Tropical Turf distance short. The son of Point of Entry was last seen taking the 1 1/2-mile Louisville Stakes at Churchill Downs in June. His most recent try going a mile was an awful 11th in the 2019 Shadwell Turf Mile. ADMISSION OFFICE is also 4-0-2-0 lifetime at Gulfstream, suggesting he’s best used underneath only. Julien Leparoux has the assignment.

The play: $10 win 3
