Sleepy Eyes Todd holds price appeal in Pegasus World Cup

The highly-anticipated Grade I, $3 million Pegasus World Cup is set for Saturday at Gulfstream Park. The prestigious 1 1/8-mile heat attracted a full field of 12, led by Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner KNICKS GO. Post time for the Pegasus, the finale on a stakes-laden 12-race program, is 5:44 p.m. ET.

#1 SLEEPY EYES TODD (8-1) appears to be offering solid value in the Pegasus World Cup. He had a solid second half of 2020, winning three of his last four starts, two of which were graded stakes. SLEEPY EYES TODD took the 1 1/8-mile Charles Town Classic, and was last seen winning the seven-furlong Mr. Prospector over this course. The Miguel Angel Silva trainee can win from on or off the pace, giving Jose Ortiz tactical options. SLEEPY EYES TODD should not be overlooked at these odds on Saturday.

#4 KNICKS GO (5-2, morning-line favorite) is a deserving favorite in the Pegasus World Cup based on speed figures. A repeat of either of his last two starts, including his effortless score in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, would put him over the top on Saturday. However, that’s far from guaranteed, as KNICKS GO has never raced at Gulfstream. Joel Rosario pilots the Brad Cox trainee once more.

#10 CODE OF HONOR (9-2) disappointed at age four, winning only once in five starts. However, three of those efforts were against Grade I company, and he hit the board in all but one of those races. CODE OF HONOR is fast enough to at least land a share in the Pegasus. It was discouraging to see John Velazquez jump off in favor of #11 MR FREEZE, but getting Tyler Gaffalione aboard is not a negative. Trainer Shug McGaughey has this son of Noble Mission working swiftly for this.

The play: $4 exacta 1,4/1,4,10, $4 win 1 ($20)
